Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta (previously known as Ambarrukmo Palace Hotel), once Yogyakarta's grandest hotel, has been
undergoing a great transformation to enthrall guests with outstanding
service and an exceptional experience.
The hotel is centrally located, within walking distance of the historic and cultural districts with the city's largest shopping mall right on the doorstep, and is less than 10 minutes from Adisucipto International Airport.
Most of Yogyakarta's must-see sites the Prambanan Temple, Sultan Palace, Kotagede and Malioboro are a short drive away.
Today the legendary Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel has been reborn, and embraces both its historic heritage and the modern comforts sought by today's guests. The renovations to both hotel and palace were made in keeping with the royal palace‘s true character and to bring back the glamour of the past merged with 21st century technology.
With its roots stretching back to the 19th century, the hotel is an integral part of the restored Ambarrukmo Royal Palace Residence.
Built between 1857 and 1859 by King Hamengkubuwono VI and named as Pesanggrahan Arjapurna. It was functioned as a meeting venue with The Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, as well as a resort for the royal family.
In 1895-1897, the palace was renovated by King Hamengkubuwono VII and functioned as meeting venue with Kings from Surakarta palace. Later the palace became a family home for the King Hamengkubuwono VII. Today, the palace is registered as a National Heritage Site, which will soon be revitalized as a museum featuring its extensive art collection.
The hotel itself was constructed in the 1960', soon after Indonesia received war reparation funds from government of Japan. On the initiative of first President Soekarno and King Hamengkubuwono IX, the hotel was opened in 1966 and became the first luxury hotel in region during that period.
Located in the same complex, the first high-end shopping mall was opened in 2006, and became the largest shopping mall in region.
Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel has achieved its iconic status not only for its pioneering luxury hotel and becoming home to many firsts, but also for being a symbol of urban culture in Yogyakarta.
